Message	deadening. It's pretty thick, and even after scraping out the original sound deadeding gunk in three spots, it's no louder than before with the new paint job. Might even be quieter. I guess I'm just anal with my Z... I couldn't leave it scratched up in there, even though you don't see it often. And if any moisture got in there, it could rust in spots. I'm still deciding what I'm going to do with the carpet, since I'm thinking of mounting an Infiniti Basslink on the driver's side back there... so I might leave the carpet out. And if I do, it won't look bad. :)
